Aldo was convinced he had done something incredibly stupid—having been entrapped by the suggestion-seduction of Mercedes. True, she was a master. The right time, the right place, a pretty woman, an offer he couldn’t refuse. But the fact was, she was a colleague in a workplace where, besides the two of them, only two twenty-year-old interns worked. Mercedes was twenty-five. The consequences of his behavior wouldn’t be good for him, no matter how attractive she was. They wouldn’t be good for Mercedes, and the inevitable repercussions they would have on his relationship with Camila wouldn’t be good either. And they wouldn’t be good for his firm. Mercedes now had power over him, personally and professionally. All because he hadn’t been able to resist an invitation that wouldn’t have had the same implications if it had happened with the same Mercedes in another place and at another point in his personal life. Camila had an incredible ability to pick up his personal and emotional conflicts; it wouldn’t take long before she started asking questions. Besides, he’d felt weak, too emotionally fragile to resist Mercedes’s stronger determination, which, after all, was designed to offer him her body and her affection to smooth over the momentary neediness he was going through. It was unfair to blame Mercedes for it. He was scared for no reason, at least no reason involving her. There was only one objective problem that he couldn’t solve: it would be impossible for Henrique and Rafaela, the interns, not to notice what was going on between him and his assistant, and that wasn’t good for his office. The fact is, though, that he was feeling better. Mercedes had given him the confidence to overcome the crisis caused by the policeman’s insistence on knowing stupid details. But more than anything, there was her exuberant shamelessness, in contrast to Camila’s near timidity in bed, which had left him looking forward to new encounters. His wife was more inquisitive than amorous. The doubt she’d subtly shown in their last conversation about Chief Espinosa was proof of that. She had even doubted what he’d told her about what had happened at the end of that street. It was understandable that the officer would be suspicious, that was expected; but for his own wife to doubt what he was saying during an intimate conversation was depressing.

As he’d been doing for the last two days, he walked to work while thinking over the changes in his relationship with Camila and the change in the nature of his relationship with Mercedes. In the case of Mercedes, if the change was dangerous, it was also a source of great pleasure.

It was after nine when he got to work. Henrique and Rafaela were there alone. Mercedes didn’t come in all morning, and she didn’t call, either. She arrived after lunch, visibly excited. She barely acknowledged the interns, went into Aldo’s office, and spoke softly while watching the door:

“I found a place for us!”

“What?”

“I found a place for us . .
